Mazzer Philos — Premium Single Dose Grinder
Mazzer Philos is a premium single dose grinder that represents a fresh chapter for one of the most respected names in the coffee industry. Handmade in Venice, Italy, by the same team that has been building commercial café grinders for over 75 years, the Philos brings light commercial precision into a compact, elegant design built for demanding home baristas and small café environments that value quality, versatility, and minimal retention above everything else.
At its core, the Mazzer Philos is engineered for one purpose: to extract the maximum flavour clarity from every bean you put into it, across every brewing method — espresso, filter, pour over, and batch brew — without waste, without cross-contamination, and without compromise.
Vertical burr design — the foundation of near-zero retention
The defining engineering choice in the Philos is its vertically oriented flat burr system. Unlike traditional horizontal flat burr grinders where gravity and static charge encourage ground coffee to cling to the chamber walls, the Philos's vertical burr orientation uses gravity as an ally — ground coffee falls straight through the grinding chamber and into the dosing cup below, leaving virtually nothing behind.
-
64mm vertical flat burrs — Two burr options available. The I200D burrs (included as standard) are engineered for maximum flavour clarity, vibrant acidity, and fruit expression — ideal for lighter specialty roasts and filter brewing. The I189D burrs are available separately for those who prefer fuller-bodied, traditional Italian-style espresso with chocolate, nut, and dried fruit notes at the fore.
-
Carefully engineered pre-breaker — The long auger (pre-breaker) that feeds beans into the vertical burr chamber is one of the Philos's most carefully engineered components. It prevents popcorning, eliminates clogging, controls the feed rate, and ensures that a constant, even flow of beans enters the grinding chamber at the correct rate. Before leaving the factory, each Philos is tested to confirm perfect parallelism of the burrs — the polished mating surfaces are verified to micron-level precision.
-
Near-zero retention — as low as 0.1g — The vertical burr orientation combined with a geometrically optimised grinding duct means the Philos retains as little as 0.1g of ground coffee between doses. Switch between single origins, between roast levels, or between espresso and filter without purging and without flavour crossover.
Grind settings — increments as small as 6 microns
The Philos offers a dual adjustment system that is genuinely unique in its class — switchable between stepped and stepless modes without tools, without losing your grind setting, and without recalibration.
-
Stepped mode — 6-micron increments — Each notch on the adjustment ring corresponds to exactly 6 microns of burr gap widening. That precision means a specific grind setting is perfectly repeatable going coarse to fine and back again — dial in your espresso at position 20 and your pour over at position 70, and switch between them freely with consistent, reproducible results every time. This covers every brewing method from espresso to batch brew.
-
Stepless mode — infinite adjustment — Remove the adjustment ring cover and the Philos converts to a fully stepless grinder for micro-adjustment dialling when working with a new coffee or chasing the last tenth of a degree of extraction. The switch between modes takes seconds and requires no tools.
Dose finisher — clean chute, zero waste
Every Philos ships with Mazzer's magnetic dose finisher — a compact tool that clips into a dedicated slot behind the removable front plate when not in use. After grinding, insert the dose finisher into the chute and give it a gentle sweep: it collects any remaining ground coffee residue from the chute walls and deposits it into the dosing cup below. Nothing left behind, nothing wasted.
Users can access the grinding chamber — tool-free
The Mazzer Philos is designed for effortless maintenance. The front stainless steel plate is held in place by strong magnets — remove it by hand, no tools required. Behind it, two long wing nuts secure the front burr carrier. Unscrew them by hand, grasp the carrier with both hands, and gently pull it out: you are now inside the grinding chamber of the Mazzer Philos, ready to clean or replace burrs.
Because the grind adjustment mechanism sits on the rear moving burr (not the front), your grind setting is completely undisturbed when you remove the front burr carrier for cleaning or burr replacement. Reassemble, and your dial is exactly where you left it.
Philos operates quietly — integrated vibration damping system
The Philos's 400-watt asynchronous motor runs at 1400–1600 RPM depending on supply frequency — low enough to generate minimal heat during grinding, preserving the volatile aromatics in your coffee, and quiet enough for early morning sessions. The integrated vibration damping system decouples the motor's operational frequencies from the body of the machine, reducing transmitted vibration and noise significantly during prolonged use. For a commercial-grade flat burr grinder, the Philos operates remarkably quietly.
Materials — stainless steel, brass, and anodized aluminium
The Mazzer Philos is constructed from stainless steel, brass, and anodized aluminium throughout — a combination chosen for precision machinability, food safety compliance, and long-term durability. Every surface that contacts coffee is certified food safe. The stainless steel burrs are moisture-safe to their bearings — the entire path from bean hopper to dosing cup is designed to resist humidity and preserve grind quality under variable conditions. Sustainable and recyclable materials are used throughout, reflecting Mazzer's commitment to responsible manufacturing.
Single dose workflow — hopper optional
The Philos is purpose-built for single dosing. The stainless steel hopper is removable — feed beans directly into the grinder without it for a cleaner workflow. Up to 24g can be loaded with the slide closed in hopperfree mode. The magnetic 58mm dosing cup clips below the chute to catch grounds directly — place your portafilter underneath for a seamless transfer.
