Description

The TDS Pen is a compact, handheld digital water quality meter that measures the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in your water — an essential tool for serious home baristas, café operators, and anyone who wants to protect their espresso machine from scale damage and brew the best-tasting coffee.

Water with the wrong mineral content can ruin great coffee and destroy expensive equipment. The TDS Pen takes the guesswork out — giving you instant, accurate readings in parts per million (ppm) so you know exactly what's flowing through your machine, every time you fill the reservoir.

Prevent scale buildup

Why Every Espresso Owner Needs a TDS Pen

The water you put into your espresso machine determines two things: how your coffee tastes, and how long your machine lasts. Tap water in many areas contains too many dissolved minerals — leading to scale buildup that ruins boilers, group heads, and steam wands. On the other end, water that's too pure (like distilled or RO without remineralisation) won't extract espresso properly.

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) recommends 75–250 ppm TDS for espresso brewing. The TDS Pen lets you check before every refill — so you know whether your filtered, bottled, or tap water is safe and optimal.

Key Features

📊 Wide Measurement Range

Reads from 0 to 9999 ppm — accurate enough for purified RO water (near 0 ppm) and high-mineral tap water alike. Covers every water source you'll encounter.

⚡ Instant Digital Readout

Clear LCD display gives you readings in seconds. Just dip, swirl, and read — no calibration steps required for everyday use.

🌡️ Auto Temperature Compensation

Built-in temperature sensor automatically compensates readings for water temperature variations — ensuring accurate results whether testing cold or warm water.

🎯 Protect Your Espresso Investment

A $30,000 La Marzocco can be ruined by hard water. The TDS Pen helps you catch scale-causing water before it damages your boiler, group head, or steam wand.

📦 Compact & Portable

Pocket-sized design fits in any kitchen drawer. Take it travelling, to a friend's house, or on cafe scouting trips. Lightweight and tough enough for daily use.

💧 Multi-Purpose Use

Beyond coffee — also tests drinking water, aquarium water, hydroponics, pools, and water filtration systems. One tool, many uses around the home.

Recommended TDS Ranges for Coffee

Water Type TDS Range Recommendation
Distilled / RO 0–10 ppm Too pure — needs remineralisation
Soft tap water 10–75 ppm Acceptable, may taste sour
SCA Ideal Range 75–250 ppm ✅ Optimal for espresso brewing
Hard water 250–500 ppm ⚠️ Filter recommended — scale risk
Very hard water 500+ ppm 🚨 Do not use — will damage machine

Who Needs a TDS Pen?

  • Home espresso machine owners protecting prosumer machines (Profitec, ECM, La Marzocco, Lelit, Rocket)
  • Café owners monitoring water quality across multiple machines
  • Specialty coffee enthusiasts dialling in water for the perfect cup
  • Third Wave Water users verifying base water is empty before adding minerals
  • RO filter owners confirming filter performance over time
  • Renters & new home buyers testing local water before installing equipment
  • Aquarium hobbyists, hydroponics growers — any water-quality application

How to Use Your TDS Pen

  1. Remove the cap to expose the metal probe at the bottom
  2. Press the power button to turn on the LCD display
  3. Dip the probe into the water sample (avoid touching the bottom of the container)
  4. Stir gently for 5–10 seconds to dislodge air bubbles
  5. Wait for the reading to stabilise — typically 10–15 seconds
  6. Read the result in ppm directly on the display
  7. Rinse with clean water and dry before storing

TDS Pen FAQs

What does TDS measure?
TDS stands for "Total Dissolved Solids" — the combined concentration of all minerals, salts, metals, and dissolved compounds in water. It's measured in parts per million (ppm). Higher TDS means more dissolved content; lower TDS means purer water.
What's the ideal TDS for espresso?
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) recommends water with TDS between 75–250 ppm for espresso brewing. Below 75 ppm, espresso may taste sour; above 250 ppm risks both poor extraction and scale buildup in your machine.
Will the TDS Pen tell me if I have hard water?
A TDS Pen indicates total mineral content but doesn't distinguish between specific minerals. High TDS often correlates with hard water (high calcium and magnesium), but for precise hardness testing you'd need GH/KH test strips. Generally: 250+ ppm = likely hard water and a filter is recommended for espresso machines.
Can I use the TDS Pen to measure coffee strength?
No. TDS pens like this measure dissolved solids in water based on conductivity — but coffee contains oils, suspended particles, and complex compounds that interfere with conductivity readings. To measure coffee TDS (extraction strength), you'll need a refractometer specifically designed for coffee. The TDS Pen is for water only.
How often should I test my water?
For tap water households: test once a week to track variation, especially if your area has seasonal water changes. For bottled/filtered water users: test once a month to verify quality and filter performance. After installing a new water filter: test immediately and weekly for the first month.
Does the TDS Pen need batteries?
Yes — typically 2x LR44 button cell batteries (included). Auto shut-off conserves battery life when not in active use. Replacement batteries are widely available at electronics and hardware stores.
How long does shipping take?
Orders placed before 12 PM EST are dispatched the same business day with full tracking. Shipping charges are calculated at checkout. All applicable taxes are managed by Di Pacci USA — no additional taxes payable by the customer.
