DF64 Gen 2 — Single Dose Coffee Grinder

The DF64 Gen 2 single dose coffee grinder is one of the most popular flat burr grinders in the world at its price point — and for good reason. Sixty-four millimetre flat burrs, near-zero retention, stepless micrometric adjustment, a plasma generator that eliminates static, and an anti-popcorn disc that keeps beans feeding consistently — all in a compact all-metal body that fits under any kitchen cabinet. The DF64 Gen 2 delivers grind quality that competes with grinders costing two or three times as much.

What's new in the Gen 2

The DF64 Gen 2 builds on the well-established DF64V platform with three meaningful upgrades that address the most common criticisms of the original:

  • Plasma generator (ionizer) in the exit chute — Static build-up was the original DF64's most notable limitation. The Gen 2 solves it at the source. A plasma generator built directly into the exit chute neutralises static charge on the ground coffee as it exits the grinder, producing fluffy, clump-free grounds that transfer cleanly into your dosing cup or portafilter with no spray, no mess, and no RDT required.
  • Anti-popcorn disc — The anti-popcorn disc sits above the burrs and prevents whole beans from bouncing and skipping around the grinding chamber before being caught by the burrs. Without it, hard single-origin beans can rattle unpredictably, causing inconsistent feed rates and occasional uneven grinds. The Gen 2's integrated anti-popcorn disc eliminates this entirely, increasing grinding speed and consistency — particularly noticeable with dense light roast beans.
  • Redesigned dial with chrome wrap and metal indicator — The stepless adjustment dial on the Gen 2 is wrapped in chrome and ships with a metal position indicator that makes reading and returning to a specific grind setting significantly easier than on the original. Your espresso setting is where you left it — no more guessing between sessions.

64mm flat burrs — grind quality above its price

The DF64 Gen 2 uses custom-made 64mm stainless steel flat burrs as standard. Flat burr grinders produce a more bimodal particle size distribution than conical burrs — delivering the clarity, brightness, and texture contrast that specialty coffee professionals prefer for both espresso and filter brewing. At 64mm, the DF64 has significantly more grinding surface area than most grinders in its class, resulting in faster, cooler, and more consistent grinding with less heat build-up.

  • Stainless steel burrs (standard) — Balanced, forgiving, and suited to all roast levels from light to dark. Produce a clean, consistent grind for espresso, pour over, and filter with excellent flavour clarity.
  • DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coated burrs (upgrade) — Harder, lower-friction coating that extends burr life significantly and produces a slightly cleaner, more uniform particle distribution. Available as an upgrade option.
  • SSP aftermarket burrs (compatible) — The DF64's open platform is compatible with SSP High Uniformity and Multi-Purpose burrs — the same burrs found in Niche Zero and other top-end grinders — for advanced users who want to push the DF64 Gen 2 into territory far above its stock configuration.

Near-zero retention — single dose, always fresh

The DF64 Gen 2 is built for single dosing. The redesigned grinding chamber achieves true retention of under 0.1g — meaning virtually nothing is left inside the grinder between doses. What you put in is what you get out, every time. The included bellows with wooden lid lets you clear any remaining grounds from the chute with a few quick compressions, ensuring a completely consistent dose before you tamp.

Switch between single origins, between roast levels, or between espresso and filter without purging wasted coffee. The DF64 Gen 2 handles all brewing methods without cross-contamination between sessions.

Stepless adjustment — infinite precision

The stepless micrometric adjustment dial provides infinite grind size settings between the finest espresso grind and the coarsest French press setting. There are no clicks, no fixed steps, and no jumping between settings. Move the dial by the smallest fraction and the grind changes accordingly — critical for dialling in espresso where the difference between a 27-second and 32-second shot can be a movement smaller than a click.

Brewing methods

  • Espresso — The primary use case. Precise, repeatable, and consistent. The anti-popcorn disc and plasma generator together make dial-in faster and cleaner than any previous DF64 version.
  • Pour over / V60 — Medium-fine range. Flat burr clarity produces bright, defined filter cups.
  • AeroPress — Works across a wide range of the dial from espresso-fine to medium-coarse.
  • French press — Coarse end of the dial. Even particle size for clean full-immersion brewing.
  • Cold brew and siphon — Medium-coarse. The DF64 handles these with the same consistency it brings to espresso.

DF64 Gen 2 vs original DF64V — should you upgrade?

  • Plasma generator — Gen 2 only. If static is a problem with your current DF64V, the Gen 2 eliminates it entirely. No more RDT, no more grounds stuck to the cup.
  • Anti-popcorn disc — Gen 2 only. Noticeably more consistent feed rates with dense light roast beans and faster overall grinding speed.
  • Chrome dial with metal indicator — Gen 2 only. Better grind setting visibility and repeatability day to day.
  • Burr compatibility — Both generations use the same 64mm burr platform. SSP, DLC, and other aftermarket burrs fit both.
