Why the Moka Express?

🏛️ A Design Icon Since 1933

Designed by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, the Moka Express has sold over 200 million units worldwide. Its octagonal silhouette is featured in the permanent collections of MoMA New York and design museums globally.

🇮🇹 Authentic Italian Espresso

Brews concentrated, full-bodied coffee that's the foundation of Italian-style cappuccinos, lattes, and espresso shots. The signature flavor profile has defined Italian home coffee for nearly 100 years.

🔥 Octagonal Heat Diffusion

The iconic eight-sided design isn't just aesthetic — it improves heat diffusion across the body, enhancing extraction quality and the aromatic profile of your coffee.

🔌 No Electricity Required

A pure stovetop coffee maker — works on gas, electric, and ceramic stovetops. Perfect for camping, off-grid living, RV trips, or simply when you want a back-to-basics coffee ritual.

⏱️ 5-Minute Brew

From cold start to coffee in your cup — typically just 4–6 minutes. Faster than waiting for a fancy espresso machine to heat up, with none of the complicated dialing-in.

🛠️ Built to Last Decades

Cast aluminum body and replaceable gaskets mean a Moka Express can last 20+ years with basic care. Many Italian families pass theirs down through generations.

How to Brew with the Moka Express

  1. Fill the bottom chamber with cold water up to (but not over) the safety valve
  2. Insert the funnel filter and fill it with finely ground coffee — level off but don't tamp
  3. Screw the top chamber on tightly — wipe any stray grounds from the rim first
  4. Place on stovetop over medium heat — too high will scorch the coffee
  5. Listen for the gurgle — when you hear a sputtering sound, the coffee is ready
  6. Remove from heat immediately and serve into espresso cups or latte glasses

Who Is the Moka Express For?

  • Italian-style coffee lovers wanting authentic stovetop espresso
  • Home coffee drinkers who don't want to invest in an espresso machine
  • Travelers, campers & RV owners needing portable, electricity-free coffee
  • Office, dorm, or apartment use where space and budget are limited
  • Gift giving — affordable, iconic, universally appreciated
  • Latte and cappuccino fans needing a strong coffee base
  • Coffee tradition lovers appreciating the ritual and design heritage

Bialetti Moka Express FAQs

What size Moka Express should I buy?
It depends on how many cups you brew at once. The "cup" sizes refer to small Italian espresso cups (~30ml). Single drinker: 1 or 2 cup. Couples: 2 or 3 cup. Family/dinner parties: 6 cup. Tip: Don't buy a bigger Moka than you'll fill — Bialetti recommends always brewing the full capacity for best results.
Will the Moka Express work on an induction stove?
No. The classic Moka Express is made of aluminum and is NOT compatible with induction cooktops. For induction stovetops, you need the Bialetti Moka Induction model — which has a stainless steel base for induction compatibility. The classic Moka Express works with gas, electric, and ceramic cooktops.
What grind size should I use for the Moka Express?
Use a fine grind — slightly coarser than espresso, finer than drip filter. Often labeled as "moka grind" on commercial coffee packaging. If using a burr grinder, set somewhere between espresso and drip. The grind should feel like fine table salt to the touch.
How do I clean my Moka Express?
Hand wash with warm water only — no soap or dishwasher. Soap strips the natural coffee oils that contribute to flavor in subsequent brews (Italians call this "seasoning"). Rinse thoroughly, dry completely before reassembling, and replace the rubber gasket every 1–2 years.
Does the Moka Express produce real espresso?
Technically, no — true espresso requires 9 bar of pressure, while the Moka Express operates at 1–2 bar. However, it produces a rich, concentrated coffee that's been the foundation of Italian home coffee for nearly a century. The flavor is closer to espresso than drip coffee, with a bolder body — perfect for lattes, cappuccinos, and authentic Italian-style coffee drinks.
Is the Bialetti Moka Express made in Italy?
Yes — Bialetti continues to manufacture the classic Moka Express in Italy. The brand was founded by Alfonso Bialetti in 1919, with the iconic Moka Express launched in 1933. Today, it remains Italy's best-known coffee maker.
