Limescale is the silent killer of espresso machines. Left unchecked, it clogs boilers, throttles water flow, and pushes your shots off-temperature. This guide walks you through descaling any espresso machine step by step — from a Breville or De'Longhi to a premium E61 machine like an ECM or Profitec — plus how often to do it and how to keep scale from coming back.
Every time your machine heats water, minerals in that water — mainly calcium and magnesium — leave behind a hard, chalky deposit called limescale. It builds up inside the boiler, the heating element, and the internal water lines where you can't see it. Descaling is the process of dissolving and flushing out that scale with a mild acid solution.
Why it matters: scale is an insulator. A scaled-up heating element has to work harder and struggles to hold a stable brew temperature — and temperature stability is the single biggest factor in a consistent espresso shot. Left long enough, scale narrows water passages, weakens flow and pressure, and can permanently damage the boiler. On a premium machine, regular descaling is the difference between a unit that lasts fifteen years and one that fails in three.
There's no single number — it depends almost entirely on your water hardness and how often you brew. Hard water (high mineral content) scales a machine far faster than soft or filtered water. As a general guide:

Many modern machines have a descale light or alert that triggers on a water-volume counter. Treat it as a reminder, not gospel — if your water is hard, you may need to descale before the light ever comes on.

This is the universal method. It works for the vast majority of tank-fed espresso machines; machine-specific notes follow in the next section.
Switch the machine off and let it cool if it's been running. Remove and empty the drip tray, and take out any water filter cartridge from the tank — descaler will ruin a filter.
Fill the water tank with fresh water and add your descaler at the dilution stated on the label. Don't eyeball it — too strong can be as harmful as too weak.
Turn the machine on. With the portafilter removed (or a blind/blank basket fitted, no coffee), run water through the brew group into your container. Stop partway, let it sit for a few minutes so the acid works on the scale, then continue.
Open the steam wand and the hot-water outlet (if fitted) for several seconds each, so solution reaches those lines too. Scale builds up everywhere hot water travels, not just the brew path.
Leave the remaining solution in the machine for the dwell time on the label (often 15–20 minutes), then run the rest of the tank through the group and wand.
This is the step people rush. Empty the tank, refill with fresh water only, and run at least two full tanks through the group head, steam wand, and hot-water tap. You want zero descaler taste or smell left behind. Refit your water filter, and you're done.
Most automatic and bean-to-cup machines have a built-in descaling program — look for a descale button or menu setting. Add the descaler to the tank, start the cycle, and the machine walks itself through the process, prompting you to empty and refill for the rinse. Always run the recommended rinse cycles afterward. Traditional home espresso machines with an E61 group and a dedicated boiler are descaled manually using the universal steps above. Because these machines are a serious investment, prevention matters even more here: many owners of machines like the ECM Synchronika or a Profitec run filtered or remineralized water specifically to stretch the interval between descales. Dual-boiler machines have two circuits — make sure solution reaches both the brew and the steam boiler.
Manual makers like a Flair have no boiler — you heat water separately in a kettle — so there's nothing internal to descale. Just keep the brew head and portafilter clean, and descale your kettle instead.
The internet is full of "just use vinegar" advice. It's cheap and it does dissolve scale — but for an espresso machine it's a poor choice. Here's the honest comparison:

The main problem with vinegar isn't whether it dissolves scale — it's that the smell and taste are extremely hard to rinse out, and repeated use can degrade rubber seals. A proper descaler costs little and protects a machine worth far more. If your machine's manufacturer names a specific product, use that.
