Moka Pot & Stovetop Coffee Makers

The moka pot is one of the most iconic ways to brew coffee — invented in Italy in 1933 by Alfonso Bialetti, it's been producing rich, espresso-style coffee on stovetops around the world ever since. Simple, reliable, and completely electricity-free, a moka pot is the perfect brewing companion whether you're at home, camping, or travelling.

At Dipacci USA, we stock a carefully selected range of moka pot and stovetop coffee makers — from the classic Bialetti moka pot to premium stainless steel moka machines and designer options like the Alessi 9090. Free shipping on orders over $100.

How does a moka pot work?

A moka pot brews coffee using steam pressure — no electricity required. Water in the lower chamber heats on your stovetop. As it reaches boiling point, steam pressure forces the hot water up through a basket of tightly packed ground coffee in the middle chamber. The brewed coffee collects in the upper chamber, ready to pour.

The result is a strong, concentrated coffee that sits between a standard drip brew and a true espresso shot — bold, rich, and intensely flavoured. Many coffee lovers use moka pot brews as a base for lattes and cappuccinos when they don't have an espresso machine at hand.

Choosing the right moka pot

  • Size — Moka pots are sized by cup count (1, 3, 6, 9, 12 cup). Note that a "cup" in moka pot terms is roughly 2 oz — much smaller than a standard coffee mug. A 6-cup moka pot makes about 10–12 oz of brewed coffee, ideal for 2–3 people.
  • Material — aluminium vs stainless steel — Traditional Bialetti moka pots use aluminium, which heats quickly and produces the classic moka flavour. Stainless steel moka machines are more durable, dishwasher safe, and compatible with induction stovetops.
  • Stovetop compatibility — Aluminium moka pots work on gas and electric stoves but NOT induction. If you have an induction cooktop, choose a stainless steel moka pot specifically labelled induction-compatible.
  • Coffee to water ratio — Always fill the water to just below the safety valve. Pack the coffee basket firmly but don't compress it — the steam pressure does the work. Use a medium-fine grind, coarser than espresso but finer than drip.

Bialetti moka pot — the original

The Bialetti moka pot is the standard moka pot that most people picture — the iconic eight-sided aluminium design created by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. Billions have been sold worldwide. The original Bialetti Moka Express remains one of the best-selling coffee makers in history, and for good reason: it's inexpensive, easy to use, and virtually indestructible with proper care.

Premium stovetop options

If you want to step up from the entry-level aluminium design, our stainless steel moka machines offer improved durability, induction compatibility, and a more refined aesthetic. The Alessi 9090 — designed by Richard Sapper in 1979 — is considered one of the finest stovetop coffee makers ever made and remains a collector's piece as well as a daily brewer.

Tips for a better moka pot brew

  • Always use pre-heated hot water in the lower chamber to avoid a bitter, over-extracted taste from prolonged heat exposure
  • Use freshly ground coffee — a medium-fine grind works best
  • Never tamp the ground coffee in the basket the way you would for an espresso machine — the steam pressure builds up dangerously if the bed is too compact
  • Remove from heat as soon as you hear the gurgling sound — that's the upper chamber filling and over-extraction happening if you leave it too long
  • Run the base under cold water immediately after brewing to stop the extraction process
